Redirect non-existent/deleted pages

Would like the ability to be able to redirect a site related url even if the url does not exist or has been deleted. Not sure if this is possible but it was on BC. Currently if you have a page or web app item you would like to redirect it has to still exist. The problem with this is the web app item now has to exist forever just so it can be redirected. This can lead to potential confusion and it would be better if we could truly delete a webapp item while still being able to redirect it.
edit: Another example of how this negatively affects usage is once you create the redirected URL you can no longer interact with the item it relates to because you can't save it anymore because the site says the URL is in use elsewhere.

Adding to this - once you redirect a page, it currently disappears from the admin. This has been quite problematic for us, because sometimes we need to reference that page content that's been redirected.

Good shout Al. Especially when clients have time-limited WebApp items such as events. I think the BC method was you set up your own custom 404 page and if the BC sub-system detected a 404, it did a redirect on the fly?
